Audition Day

Auditions can make dancers nervous but we aim to make them as friendly as possible.  We recommend arriving 10 minutes early to sign in and pick up your number.

If you want to dance on a ballet, jazz or contemporary team you should come to the technical audition for your age.  If you want to dance on a hip hop crew, you should come to the hip hop audition for your age.  You’ll need to attend both auditions if you want to dance on both a hip hop team and another style.

You should dress to impress in your best dance outfit.  If you’re coming to a technical audition that means your hair is up and tidy, you are wearing tight fitting dance clothes (no t-shirts or anything loose to the body), and your choice of jazz shoes, ballet shoes, or half soles.  If you’re coming to a hip hop audition your clothing doesn’t need to be skin tight but shouldn’t be so baggy that we can’t see you dance.  Wear your hair up and have sneakers.

Your audition will feel a lot like a dance class.  We’ll do a quick warm up and some stretches.  Then we’ll ask to see some technique elements across the floor.  Don’t worry if we ask to see a step you don’t know.  Just do your best!  We’ll review the choreography from the videos below and then you’ll  perform the dance with a group of other dancers.  We’ll end the audition by giving everyone a chance to show us a trick or something you want us to see that hasn’t come up yet.  This is a great chance to show off any tumbling skills you have or just something that you do really well.

Audition Combos

Here are the videos of the dances you’ll want to learn before the audition

Hip Hop Audition A

This dance is to “Ready Set ” by Joey Valence & Brae starting 1 minute and 7 seconds in.
Learn the dance the best you can, but we don’t expect dancers at this age to have it perfect for auditions.  We want to see your performance skills as well as your dance moves so show us big personality!  Improv the first 12 counts of the dance as you come on from the side.

We’ll be reviewing this dance in Freshman Crew, Thursday April 30th 6:30-7:30 and May 2nd at the TNT if you would like some extra help.

Hip Hop Audition B

This dance is to Hit the Quan by ILoveMemphis.  The dance starts at 0:45.  We will be reviewing the choreography in the audition, but you should know it well before then. We want to see your performance skills as well as your best technique.  Do you best to prepare, but don’t stress yourself out if it isn’t perfect.  No dancer is perfect!

We’ll go over this combo April 27 and May 4th 6:30-7:30 as well as in the May 2nd TNT if you would like some extra help.

Technical Audition A

This dance is to I Love It, by Icona Pop.  The choreography starts at 0:52.

We’ll review the dance in auditions, but do your best to know it before then! Try and make your movement more specific than fluid.

We’ll review this combo Wednesday during Junior Elite, April 29th and May 6th 5:30-6:30 as well as at the May 2nd TNT if you would like some extra help.

Technical Audition B and C

This dance is to Running Up That Hill by Kate bush.  Start the song at the 0:50 mark.
