Audition Information

2023 Dance Teams

We are so excited to have you auditioning for our 2023 competition dance teams! On this page you’ll find everything you need to know, including videos of the dance(s) you should learn for auditions. If you have any questions at all, shoot us an email at info@danceconceptsutah.com.

To register for auditions, log into your Parent Portal. Go to “Classes and Events” then click “Find Events.”

Basic Info

Date: Saturday, April 23rd.

Location: Auditions for all of our teams will be held at the Sandy location. 9492 S. Union Square.

Times:

Technical audition ages 4-6: 9:00-10:00
Hip Hop ages 6-10: 10:00-11:00
Technical audition ages 7-10: 11:00-1:00
Hip Hop Ages 10-18: 1:00-2:00
Technical audition ages 11-18: 2:00-4:00

Cost: $10 (If you are auditioning in both a technical audition and a hip hop audition you only need to pay one audition fee)

Audition Day

Auditions can make dancers nervous but we aim to make them as friendly as possible. We recommend arriving 10 minutes early to sign in and pick up your number.

If you want to dance on a ballet, jazz or contemporary team you should come to the technical audition for your age. If you want to dance on a hip. hop crew, you should come to the hip hop audition for your age. You’ll need to attend two auditions if you want to dance on both a hip hop team and another style.

You should dress to impress in your best dance outfit. If you’re coming to a technical audition that means your hair is up and tidy, you are wearing tight fitting dance clothes (no t-shirts or anything loose to the body), and your choice of jazz shoes, ballet shoes, or half soles. If you’re coming to a hip hop audition your clothing doesn’t need to be skin tight but shouldn’t be so baggy that we can’t see you dance. Wear your hair up and have sneakers.

Your audition will feel a lot like a dance class. We’ll do a quick warm up and some stretches. Then we’ll ask to see some technique elements across the floor. Don’t worry if we ask to see a step you don’t know. Just do your best! We’ll review the choreography from the videos below and then you’ll perform the dance with a group of other dancers. We’ll end the audition by giving everyone a chance to show us a trick or something you want us to see that hasn’t come up yet. This is a great chance to show off any tumbling skills you have or just something that you do really well.

Technical Audition Ages 4-6

This dance is to “I Will Survive by Demi Lovato” (Apple. Spotify.) We want to see your performance skills as well as your dance moves so show us big dramatic faces that go with the dance.
We have reversed this video so you can learn it by mirroring Miss Alicia. That means that the first step forward should be with your right foot, and it is also your right leg that comes out on “I grew strong.” Learn the dance the best you can, but we don’t expect dancers at this age to have it perfect for auditions.

Technical Audition Ages 7-10

This dance is to “Bom Bom Bom” but it is a cut version so you’ll want to use this link for the music or practice with the video below. The first video is an instructional walk through. The second shows the dance with music and is great to practice with.

Because Miss Julie is filming in the mirror, you should be able to mirror her and be on the correct foot. Pay attention to when she specifies right and left to be sure.

Technical Audition Ages 11-18

This dance is to “Don’t Wanna Dance” by Boston Bunn. It starts about 24 seconds into the song. Spotify Link. The first video is a walk through with instructions. The second video is Allie showing you what it looks like with music. Do not mirror the choreography, meaning when Allie uses her left hand (not the left side of the video), you should use your left hand. In the talk through, she specifies which foot/hand to use many times. If that’s hard for you, you might want to watch the video in the mirror.

We will be reviewing the choreography in the audition, but you should know it well before then. We’re looking for stage quality performance on audition day.

Hip Hop Audition Ages 6-10

This dance is to “Where Them Girls At” by David Guetta. The beginning of the dance is free style. The choreography begins with the jump to face the back. The first video is filmed from the back and is probably easier for most dancers to learn from. The second video is filmed from the front so you can see better what the whole thing looks like.

Hip Hop Audition Ages 11-18

This dance is to “GDFR” by Flo Rida.
